Drop off - remote releasing mechanism for wildlife GPS collar

The drop off is developed to faciliate retrieval of the GPS collar without having to recapture the animal. It is stand-alone and is mechanically attached to the collar. After use, it is not possible to recharge the drop off.

Two drop off-versions are available:

    • Pre-programmed drop off
    • Remote control drop off

1. The pre-programmed version of the drop off (figure 1) disengages after expiry of pre-programmed time delay. The time has to be set by the collar manufacturer and cannot be changed. The mechanism is working by relative time function, not absolute time. After the collar is fitted on the animal, a magnet has to be removed from its slot. This activates the time clock and the factory pre-programmed time delay countdown commences. If the magnet is put back to the slot, the time delay counter is back to the off modus.

2. The remote control drop off (figure 2 and 3) disengages the collar belt by a radio command.

After the collar is fitted on the animal, the magnet has to be removed from the slot. This activates the receiver for the radio signal. Putting the magnet back, the system is again in an off modus.

The radio command is send by a transmitter (incl. a three element Yagi antenna). To retrieve a collar you have to find the collared animal by its VHF frequency and send the respective drop off release code. Within a range of 200 m (the range can be larger and is depending on several factors like moisture, relief etc.) the collar can be  remotely released.
